Functional pots made with wild harvested clay from land I tend here in Madison county North Carolina. Every piece is hand made, pit fired and food safe.
I have been playing with clay for over 13 years! My styles and interests in ceramics are always changing but for some time I have been obsessed with wild clay and atmospheric firing. I started experimenting with the clay on my land and other friends land here in Marshall and firing it in pits dug into the ground. This form of working with clay and firing has brought the spirit back in the making of pottery for me, it feels like its the way I have always been meant to make pots. It is very communal and very physical - my friends and I build and tend a very hot fire for over 12 hours to make these beautiful vessels. While the fire is being stoked we hang out, make food, play music and make overall merriment which I feel definitely adds to the magic of all the pots being fired in the pit! And the next day after not enough sleep the most magical part is creeping back to the pit in the morning fog, sifting through the still warm ashes to unearth each piece to see how they faired the firing. Each piece has its own unique markings created by the fire which is way better then any glaze or design I could draw on them!
Every piece food safe, I hand burnish each one before firing which helps to close up the pores of the clay body and after the firing I spray them with this product call Liquid Quartz Sealer which makes them water resistant and food safe. check out the Liquid Quartz website for more information.
